Elias Law Group Partner Ezra Reese joined FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez this week for a discussion hosted by the Freedom of the Press Foundation to talk about how federal agencies are abusing their authority to target First Amendment rights. “Any nonprofit organization should have some idea of what they’re going to do if the IRS or somebody else comes after them," Reese said. https://lnkd.in/eqX7aZJQ

NEWS: Elias Law Group attorneys representing a group of Wisconsin voters filed a new lawsuit challenging the state’s congressional district map as an illegal partisan gerrymander under the Wisconsin Constitution. “Wisconsin voters deserve congressional districts that ensure all voices and viewpoints are fairly represented,” said Elias Law Group partner Abha Khanna. “Unfortunately, Wisconsin’s current congressional map has unfairly rewarded Republicans with a significant electoral advantage and will continue to do so for the remainder of the decade. Wisconsin voters should not have to endure another election cycle under unconstitutional district lines, and we are proud to represent voters who are calling on the court to strike down this illegal map.” https://lnkd.in/ettmrEQZ

Count US IN is proud to challenge Indiana’s Student ID Ban, which is a deliberate and targeted attack on the fundamental rights of young voters across Indiana. For two decades, student IDs have been a valid form of voter ID, but now the state legislature has decided to ban this form of identification without evidence or justification. This is not about election integrity; it’s about silencing the voices of young Hoosiers. We are the future of this state, and we will not stand by while our government creates unnecessary barriers to the ballot box that will disproportionally impact young, BIPOC, and Disabled voters. Every voter deserves equal access to the democratic process. Count US IN is committed to fighting back against this unconstitutional assault on our voting rights to ensure every voice is heard, because our voices matter. Learn more about Count US IN v. Morales here: http://eepurl.com/jd4wAw Image Description: “Breaking: Lawsuit Filed because young voter’s voices matter.” In bold text with Count US IN logo.

NEWS: On May 5, a federal judge appointed by President Trump ruled that the North Carolina State Board of Elections must certify Justice Allison Riggs as the victor of the 2024 North Carolina Supreme Court race. Elias Law Group was proud to represent VoteVets Action Fund, the North Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans, and North Carolina voters in a lengthy and high-profile legal battle over the fate of tens of thousands of ballots wrongfully called into question by Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin after he lost the election. "This ruling stands as a powerful rebuke to a dangerously cynical strategy that would have retroactively stripped thousands of eligible North Carolina voters of their right to vote," said Lali Madduri, Partner at Elias Law Group. "This attempt to overturn an election by disqualifying lawfully cast ballots months after they were counted is the product of a Republican Party that has fully embraced election denialism, and whose standard bearers are willing to concoct absurd legal theories to disenfranchise their friends and neighbors--and even servicemembers--all to avoid coming to terms with the will of the voters. Judge Griffin did not even dispute that these votes were cast by North Carolinians who followed the law. We are glad the Court sent a clear message that these sorts of tactics are wrong and an affront to our democracy.” https://lnkd.in/dFtiruVA

NEWS: On April 24, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking multiple provisions of President Trump's March 25 executive order that sought to dramatically overhaul federal election procedures, in response to a lawsuit brought by Elias Law Group attorneys representing the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Democratic Governors Association (DGA), Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. "Our Constitution entrusts Congress and the states —not the president — with the authority to regulate federal elections," Judge Kollar-Kotelly wrote in a 120-page opinion. "And no statutory delegation of authority to the Executive Branch permits the president to short-circuit Congress's deliberative process by executive order." https://lnkd.in/ee46zhz5

CLIENT ALERT: This afternoon, President Trump signed a presidential memorandum, directing the Attorney General of the United States to investigate allegations of unlawful contributions made via online fundraising platforms. This President’s demand that the Attorney General investigate platforms that facilitate the fundraising efforts of his political opponents is merely the latest in a stream of actions that violate the post-Watergate norm that presidents are not to interfere with Department of Justice actions. If you have any questions about the Memo, or about the Trump Administration’s efforts to investigate or harm its political adversaries, please do not hesitate to reach out to your counsel at Elias Law Group. https://lnkd.in/eewEuZQ6
