NEW: Elias Law Group partner David R. Fox spoke with Wisconsin Public Radio about a new right-wing lawsuit that aims to purge Wisconsin's voter rolls: ▶ "Attorney David Fox, with the Democratic firm Elias Law Group, said PILF was part of a growing push by conservatives using the NVRA to "undertake hasty, rushed voter purges." ▶ “What they’re asking for is low cost access to complete detailed voter data, including the date of birth information, which they say openly that they want to use to scrutinize Wisconsin’s voter rolls,” Fox said. Fox said that could let conservative groups more easily compare the voter data to public records, which are often unreliable, and use the information in an effort to remove more voters from the rolls."

🆕 from States Newsroom/Daily Montanan: Federal judge temporarily halts new Montana voter registration requirements. Key points: ▶ "A federal Montana judge on Wednesday temporarily enjoined two parts of a bill dealing with extra voter registration requirements that was passed by the legislature last year" ▶ "At the hearing in the federal case, an attorney for the two groups said the provision was a 'wolf in sheep’s clothing' because double-voting, which is what the sponsor of the bill said the measure would clarify, was already illegal in Montana and under federal law before the 2023 legislative session. Elias Law Group Attorney Aria Branch said the requirements are confusing and could lead an unsuspecting person to commit a felony even if they had no intention of voting twice in the same election." ▶ "The Montana Republican Party and Republican National Committee, which intervened in the case, had told Morris that he shouldn’t enjoin the law so close to Montana’s June 4 primary election because that too would confuse voters and elections administrators. In Wednesday’s order, Morris sided with the plaintiffs on nearly every argument." Congratulations to MONTANA PUBLIC INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP (MontPIRG) and the Montana Federation of Public Employees on this important victory.

🚨 On Wednesday, a federal court temporarily blocked Montana’s new Republican-backed voter suppression law, after Elias Law Group challenged the law on behalf of MONTANA PUBLIC INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP (MontPIRG) and Montana's largest labor union, the Montana Federation of Public Employees. "In challenging the law, the Montana Public Interest Research Group and the Montana Federation of Public Employees argue that while the law ostensibly targets “double voting” — a voter voting twice in one election, which is already banned — it actually imposes vague language and unclear standards that threaten to subject voters to criminal penalties if the voter unintentionally or unknowingly remains registered in another location," writes Democracy Docket.
